Introduction
Hello! This is Tokyo Mate, introducing Tokyo’s hidden charms.
Want to spend the most relaxed and elegant time during your Tokyo trip? I highly recommend Jiyugaoka!
Just 15 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Shibuya and Shinjuku, this area is called ‘Tokyo’s Little Europe.’ I’ve compiled a half-day travel course connecting Jiyugaoka’s must-visit spots, cafes, boutiques, and cake shops.
With this guide alone, no more worrying about routes! Just follow along.

Jiyugaoka at a Glance
True to its name meaning “Hill of Freedom,” this neighborhood features gentle hills and charming alleys. Instead of high-rise buildings, you’ll find 2-3 story brick buildings filled with Jiyugaoka cake shops and interior boutiques—it’s a place locals vote as ’the most desirable neighborhood to live in.’

🚆 How to Get to Jiyugaoka (Transportation)
Jiyugaoka Station is a transportation hub where the Tokyu Toyoko Line (TY) and Oimachi Line (OM) meet.
1. From Shibuya
- Tokyu Toyoko Line (TY) Shibuya Station → Jiyugaoka Station direct, approximately 12 minutes.
2. From Shinjuku
- Fukutoshin Line (F) Shinjuku-sanchome Station → Jiyugaoka Station direct, approximately 19 minutes.
- Yamanote Line (JY) Shinjuku Station → Transfer to Tokyu Toyoko Line (TY) at Shibuya Station, approximately 23 minutes
3. From Other Major Areas in Tokyo
- Take JR/Subway to Shibuya Station or Nakameguro Station → Transfer to Tokyu Toyoko Line (TY) and get off at Jiyugaoka Station.
📌 Mate’s Tip: The Tokyu Railway to Jiyugaoka is NOT covered by the Tokyo Subway Ticket (subway pass). Use a Suica/Pasmo card or purchase a separate ticket!
Recommended Half-Day Jiyugaoka Course
From the station, follow the golden route: [South Walkway → Cross Railway to Cafe Street → North Shopping District].
1️⃣ Marie Claire Street & Greenway - Start of Jiyugaoka Journey
Exit through Jiyugaoka Station’s South Exit to discover this European-style street. Start your walk along the ‘Greenway’ where just sitting on a bench feels healing.

- Cuoca: High-quality matcha powder, Japanese flour, various baking molds—hard-to-find baking ingredients in Korea are abundant here.

2️⃣ Onibus Coffee & Dulton - Hipster Vibe Recharge Course
Cross the railway to reach the area where Jiyugaoka hipsters gather.
- Onibus Coffee (ONIBUS): The epitome of Tokyo specialty coffee. Experience a life-changing latte here without going to Nakameguro. A hip Jiyugaoka cafe perfect for a shopping break.

- Dulton: A large American vintage-style home goods store. The building itself is so beautiful that an entrance photo is a must! Time flies in this Jiyugaoka boutique—it’s like an ant trap.

3️⃣ Koso-an, La Vita & Mont St. Clair - Fail-Safe Classic Course
A course where Japanese tradition and exotic photo spots coexist.
- Kumano Shrine: A serene shrine hidden behind the bustling shopping district. The red torii gate visible through lush trees is impressive—perfect for experiencing quiet Japanese aesthetics during shopping.
📍 Google Maps (Kumano Shrine)↗ 📍

- Koso-an (古桑庵): A tea house utilizing a traditional Japanese house. How about a bowl of ‘matcha shiratama’ while viewing the garden from a tatami room? Koso-an is the most popular must-visit course in Jiyugaoka.

- La Vita: Famous as ‘Tokyo’s Venice,’ but actually quite compact. You might be disappointed if you visit just for this spot—I recommend stopping by lightly on the way to Mont St. Clair for a pretty photo.

- Mont St. Clair: The main shop of dessert god ‘Tsujiguchi Hironobu.’ This is called the Jiyugaoka cake sanctuary. Be sure to try the signature menu item ‘C’est la vie.’

4️⃣ TODAY’S SPECIAL & Sunset Alley - Lifestyle Shopping Mecca
Head down to Gakuen Street to find lifestyle shops lined up.
- TODAY’S SPECIAL: The very place famous for Marche bags! So much to see including kitchenware and groceries.
📍 Google Maps (TODAY’S SPECIAL)↗ 📍

- Sunset Alley: An alley where charming Jiyugaoka boutiques gather. The atmosphere is especially beautiful at sunset.

5️⃣ I’m donut? & de aone - Rising Jiyugaoka Hotspots
The newest landmarks in Jiyugaoka.
- I’m donut?: A fresh donut shop requiring early queuing. If the line is short, buy without hesitation!

- de aone: A shopping complex where the sunset and Mount Fuji view from the 3rd-floor rooftop terrace (Haruniwa) is art.

6️⃣ Paris S’eveille & Statue of Liberty - Sweet Finale
The end of a journey is, of course, sweetness.
- Paris S’eveille: A top-ranked patisserie on Tabelog, on par with Mont St. Clair. Be careful as items sell out if you arrive late! Highly recommended if you’re looking for true Jiyugaoka restaurants.

- Statue of Liberty: Return to the station viewing Jiyugaoka’s symbol at the station front rotary.
